The primary task of SMH is to ensure metal supply for the European subsidiaries of Diehl Metall Stiftung & Co. KG while also serving external customers outside the Diehl group. The business comprises trading in ores, metals and metal residues and the provision business as a metal service for internal and external customers. For risk mitigation SMH uses LME financial contracts in cooperation with established brokers; related activities such as exchange margin management and mark-to-market valuations are part of its services. Operationally SMH concludes long- and short-term physical supply and offtake contracts and trades copper scrap with smelters to cover demand for copper cathodes; the company itself employs no staff.
